Wilfred Racine was born in New Bedford, Mass., but moved to the
Burlington area when he was still a small child. After graduating from
Burlington High School, Willie joined the armed services and flew 35
missions as a tail gunner in the European Theatre during World War II.
Upon returning to Vermont, he met his wife Annette and together they
operated a Texaco service station on Route 7 in Burlington. Then, in
1967, Willie and Annette acquired the Jeep franchise and opened a
one-car showroom on Pine Street. Finally, in 1974, they additionally
acquired the American Motors franchise and built the present-day
building at 1650 Shelburne Road in South Burlington.
