Wilfred Racine was born in New Bedford, Mass., but moved to the Burlington area when he was still a small child. After graduating from Burlington High School, Willie joined the armed services and flew 35 missions as a tail gunner in the European Theatre during World War II. Upon returning to Vermont, he met his wife Annette and together they operated a Texaco service station on Route 7 in Burlington. Then, in 1967, Willie and Annette acquired the Jeep franchise and opened a one-car showroom on Pine Street. Finally, in 1974, they additionally acquired the American Motors franchise and built the present-day building at 1650 Shelburne Road in South Burlington.
