New Special Edition Grand Cherokee

Jeep® Introduces New Production-intent Concept Grand Cherokee at Houston Auto Show

Showing the vehicle publicly for the first time this morning at the Houston Auto Show, Jeep also announced that it has created an online contest for consumers to name the new production-intent Grand Cherokee concept. The person who chooses the winning name will have an opportunity to win a new 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

"Highlighted by a unique platinum-chrome front-end appearance and distinctive black-gloss 20-inch wheels and exterior treatments, our new Grand Cherokee concept provides a completely new look ? one that is edgy and aggressive, and certainly different than any Grand Cherokee on the road today," said Mike Manley, President and CEO ? Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "Jeep enthusiasts have always appreciated limited-edition models and the ability to customize their vehicles. This new Grand Cherokee comes with a unique, 'factory-customized' stealth appearance directly from Jeep, and is certain to attract interest from an array of potential customers.

"We plan to garner feedback from consumers at the Houston Auto Show, and via our online Jeep 'Name My Ride' contest," Manley added. "If the level of excitement is what we anticipate, this new Grand Cherokee will be in Jeep showrooms this spring."

In the U.S., Grand Cherokee sales increased 51 percent in 2011 vs. 2010. In Texas, sales increased 226 percent. The Jeep Grand Cherokee was named "SUV of Texas" the past two years by the Texas Auto Writers Association.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Production-intent Concept
With the Laredo X package as its starting point, the new production-intent concept Jeep Grand Cherokee combines a variety of exterior design changes to create a unique model with an aggressive, chrome and "blacked-out" look.

The vehicle's grille surround appears in Black, and mesh grille texture in Platinum Chrome. A Platinum Chrome lower fascia applique´ completes the unique front-end appearance. Black headlamp bezels and a Black liftgate light-bar continues the "blacked-out" theme throughout the vehicle's exterior.

The production-intent concept rides on 20-inch tires that surround one-of-a-kind Black-gloss aluminum wheels for Jeep.

Based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo X package, the production-intent concept model includes standard leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, a 9-speaker 506 watt amp sound system with subwoofer, iPod/MP3 connectivity, Parkview™ rear back-up camera, ParkSense® rear-park assist system, Keyless Enter-N-Go, Chrysler Group's Uconnect hands-free communications system, and more than 50 advanced safety and security features.

Shown in Houston as a Brilliant Black 4x4 model, a Deep Cherry Red 4x4 version will be on display tomorrow at the Washington (D.C.) Auto Show.

Wrangler Production Increasing

Chrysler boosting Wrangler production

Writing in Automotive News, Larry Villequette reports that Chrysler and union officials representing workers at the Toledo Supplier Park plant have agreed to a plan increasing Jeep Wrangler production by 90 units per day.

Under the agreement, 25 workers on each of the two ten-hour daily shifts will be reassigned from non-production jobs to positions on the assembly line. This will allow the addition of about five vehicles per hour to the schedule. The plant currently builds about 700 Wranglers per day.

U.S. Wrangler sales jumped 30 percent last year and inventory levels have remained tight. According to numbers released today, the Toledo plant produced 62,798 Wranglers and 102,368 Wrangler Unlimiteds in 2011.

Winter Safety Features on the Grand Cherokee

Snow Can't Slow Grand Cherokee | 9 Winter Safety Features

JP012 057GC mid Snow Can't Slow Grand Cherokee | 9 Winter Safety Features jeep grand cherokee photo

Snow is flying ? at least here in Michigan it is ? and highways around the Great Lakes are getting sketchy. We know as well as anyone that off-roading in snow is a blast, but when you're headed to work or have the family in tow, you want to be secure, which is where the 2012 Jeep® Grand Cherokee comes in. This vehicle will boldly go forth in the most hazardous and icy conditions and keep you sheltered from the elements. Here are nine safety features you'll be glad to have when the next lake-effect snowstorm blows into town:

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): The all-new ACC automatically adjusts cruising speed to maintain a safe, preset distance between you and the cars ahead, because nothing is worse than a minor brake light setting an entire line of cars into an unnecessary-braking panic on icy roads.

Smartbeam™ Headlamps with Auto Leveling: When the nights are longer, the snow machine kicks into high gear. Fortunately, Bi-Xenon High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps will shine up to three times brighter than regular headlamps, and auto-leveling keeps your lights focused on the road, instead of into the blinding static of heavy white flakes in a black night sky.

Rain-Sensing Wipers and Rain Brake Support: You know that transition between rain and snow and back again? Grand Cherokee's wipers detect raindrops and activate on their own so you don't have to flip the wipers on and off, and a new smart brake system helps dry the rotors on wet roads.

Active Head Restraints: We hope you never get in an accident, but if you do, these head restraints can help stave off injuries during rear-impact collisions.

Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Driving in treacherous weather requires a lot of attention. When hazards are all around, Grand Cherokee senses road hazards and helps alert you to impending, dangerous objects in your path.

Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM): Ever notice that in winter those ditches on the side of the road seem just a little deeper? If things get rough, Grand Cherokee's ERM takes immediate action to help you maintain stability.

Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA): Because climbing a snow-covered hill is just as important as being able to drive down it safely. Next time you go over the river and through the woods, Grandma will have nothing to worry about.

Antilock Brake System (ABS): This ABS system performs on slippery and wet roads. It also knows when you're driving over rough terrain and adjusts accordingly ? a must-have on slippery onramps and ice-covered back roads.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC): Put it all together, and this vehicle-wide network of safety sensors ? Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM), antilock brake system (ABS) and Brake Assist, All-Speed Traction Control, and available Trailer Sway Control (TSC) ? make driving in the snow a bit easier? and a bit safer.

Other safety features include Parkview® and Parksense® Park System Assist, Trailer Sway Control, Airbag System, Sentre® Key Engine Immobalizer, and Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Path Detection System.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

SRT8 Jeep By Hennessey

This $235,000 Jeep SRT8 is quicker than a Porsche Turbo

A tuned Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 that can get from 0-60 in 3.1 seconds? Indeed, it's a Texas thing. It's the 800-hp HPE800 Twin Turbo Jeep by Hennessey Performance. The price is oilman-rich too: It starts at $235,000.

The latest ? and rarest (they're only making 24 of them) ? of HPE's tuned Jeeps gets a punched-out 6.4-liter Hemi V8 displacing seven liters (426 cubic inches), and fitted with twin-turbo induction. The specs bear out the work's effectiveness: 805 hp and 823 lb-ft. Hennessey says the HPE800 SRT8 can also do the quarter-mile in 10.9 sec. @ 130 mph. Yes. That thing's hotter than a two-dollar pistol at a 24-hour shootout.

But it's not just the powerplant, it's all the supporting stuff too: upgraded transmission and torque converter, 15.1 inch Brembo brakes front and rear, lowered suspension, lighter-than-stock alloys, carbon fiber front splitter and a custom leather interior with de rigeur Alcantara steering wheel.

Head muckity muck John Hennessey says the HPE800 Jeep is for the discerning captain of industry or second-world tycoon: "This vehicle is designed for the performance minded driver who lives in Aspen or Moscow and wants to be the fastest in all weather conditions."

Dirty 13 : A Jeep Rescue Club

'13' is lucky for snowbound Christmas tree hunters

STEVENS PASS, Wash. - Lots of city folk drive to the Cascades this time of year, braving the snow to find and cut down the perfect fresh Christmas tree.

But what happens when they get hopelessly stuck in the process?

Luckily for them, there is a rugged team of four-wheel fanatics - who make sure everybody gets home safely.

In this close-knit group there are 13 rigs, 13 drivers - and 13 good hearts.

The Dirty Thirteen is a Jeep enthusiast club that spends December weekends patrolling the mountain roads in the Skykomish Ranger District, looking for drivers in need of rescue.

"Everybody here loves Jeeps. Everybody here is a four-wheel driver. Everybody here likes to help people," says group member Carl Niebuhr.

David Bjornsen says he was sure glad to seem them when he got stuck in the snow.

"These guys came up with a Jeep - that was a blessing - and pulled us out," Bjornsen says.

The Dirty Thirteen don't get paid, and they don't ask for money.

"We don't ask for anything - maybe a thank-you," says Niebuhr.

Sometimes less experienced four-wheel drivers run into trouble. Members of the "thirteen" are happy to help them, too.

About half of the people who get stuck out here in the mountains are families who start the day excited to cut down their own Christmas tree - and frustrated when their car won't make it back down.

It's a relief for them to know the Dirty Thirteen have their back.

"That's in the back of my mind. These guys are out there. They'll save us," Marty Heneghn says.

The Dirty Thirteen Club has been rescuing drivers in the mountains for more than 30 years.

Add to that the availability of two body styles, two transmission choices and the option of hard or soft top, and you can personalize your Wrangler before you ever leave the showroom. At a price that can't be beat and capability that is unrivaled, the Wrangler is clearly the best factory 4x4 on the market.

Wrangler gets 4 Wheeler of the Year again

The 2012 Jeep® Wrangler Rubicon has been named "Four Wheeler of the Year" by Four Wheeler magazine. Editor John Cappa wrote, "The 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon owned nearly all aspects of off-road testing during our annual 'Four Wheeler of the Year' competition. The grueling 1,000-mile trek put each contending vehicle through its paces in several on- and off-road environments, including high-speed graded roads, jagged rocks, shifting sand dunes, and more. The universal do-all capability of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon allowed it to outperform the other competing 4x4s, making it our 2012 Four Wheeler of the Year award winner."

To qualify for the competition, entries had to be entirely new or have substantial mechanical revisions from a previous model year. Testing was conducted over more than a thousand miles on a variety of terrain, including pavement, gravel, dirt, sand, rocks and mud, at elevations ranging from sea level to more than 9,000 feet.

The 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon "Four Wheeler of the Year" award comes a year after the Jeep Grand Cherokee ? the premium icon of the brand ? captured the award, and less than two years after the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon was named the Best 4×4 vehicle of the 2000-2009 decade by Four Wheeler magazine.

Jeep Wrangler sales are up 28% in the U.S., year-to-date.

Wrangler Plant Expansion

Chrysler announces Toledo investments

Chrysler will invest $1.7 billion to build the next Jeep® SUV in 2013, according to announcements made today in Toledo, Ohio. A $500 million upgrade of the Toledo Assembly Complex (Ohio) will add a second shift of production, or about 1,100 jobs, bringing total employment at the complex to over 2,800. This is not a new Wrangler, but a replacement for the current Jeep Liberty, which will be built in Toledo and exported across the world.

Chrysler Group Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne, along with Ohio Governor John Kasich, U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur, Toledo Mayor Mike Bell, UAW Regional Director Ken Lortz, and other local officials joined employees to celebrate the news.

Marchionne confirmed that the new Jeep D-segment SUV would be built in the Toledo facility for export to markets all over the world.

The Toledo plant will get a 260,000-square-foot expansion of the body shop and a state-of-the-art, 26,000-square-foot Metrology Center, which will help improve quality by verifying key measurements. The remainder of the $1.7 billion will be invested in other Chrysler Group facilities in the U.S., supplier tooling and other related development costs.

Work on the plant will begin in 2011 and continue into 2012. The second shift will not begin until the third quarter of 2013; applicants should not visit the plant, but instead go to www.chryslercareers.com.

Chrysler has announced plans for over $4.5 billion in United States investments since June 2009.

The plant is on the site of the old Stickney Plant, built by Autolite in 1942. AMC purchased it in 1964 and used it to machine and build engines until 1981, when it was converted for production of the Jeep® Grand Wagoneer. It was renamed the Toledo Assembly Plant when Chrysler Corporation acquired American Motors Corporation (AMC) in August 1987, and continued making Grand Wagoneers through 1991.

In the fall of 1997, Toledo North Assembly Plant was built for the production of the Jeep Liberty, which launched in April 2001. The 2007 Dodge Nitro launched in August 2006 and the 2008 Jeep Liberty launched in July 2007. In 2005, the Toledo Supplier Park was built to include body, paint and chassis operations in partnership with Kuka, Magna and OMMC in new buildings on the same site as Toledo North Assembly and the former Stickney Assembly with Chrysler handling the final assembly of all three major components for the Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited. Production of the 2011 Jeep Wrangler began in August 2010. In the first quarter of 2011, Chrysler Group assumed responsibility for the paint operations, previously managed by Magna.

The New Pentastar V6

2012 Jeep® Wrangler's 3.6L Penastar V-6

Posted on Monday, October 24, 2011 at 2:02 pm by Jeep in Jeep Wrangler

Jeep Penastar.jpg 2012 Jeep® Wrangler's 3.6L Penastar V 6 jeepwrangler photo

The asphalt doesn't stand a chance in 2012. Winner of the prestigious Ward's 10 Best Engines award, the redesigned 3.6L Penastar V-6 in the 2012 Jeep® Wrangler just keeps climbing ? literally and figuratively. Now with 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque and offering a new 5-speed automatic transmission, this year's engine eclipses previous versions while delivering a 10% increase in fuel efficiency, up to 21 miles per gallon on the highway.

The new Wrangler reaches 60 mph in just 6.7 seconds. But as Jeep enthusiasts know, off-roading is most important, and the Wrangler really shows its teeth on the trails, powering over rocky inclines and maneuvering down the toughest of trails. Take your pick: fording water hazards, climbing the most treacherous terrain, or weaving the traffic. The new Penastar V-6  in the 2012 Wrangler is simply dominant.

New Vehicle Order Tracking System

Chrysler unveils new vehicle order tracking system

As of today, Chrysler customers can easily track the production of their new Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Ram vehicle. The automakers has introduced a new consumer-focused, self-service Vehicle Order Tracking System (VOTS) that allows tracking by using the VIN, which is e-mailed to the customer as soon as it is generated.

To take advantage of the new system, the customer provides their first and last names (along with certain other information) and an e-mail address when they order their new vehicle. The customer will then receive just three emails about their new vehicle once they leave the dealer: Order confirmation; Production Scheduled, and the email will include a link to the VOTS site, plus their VIN; and shipment confirmation.

The Vehicle Order Tracking System can be accessed at each of the brand sites using the same URL format:

http://www.Chrysler.com/vots

http://www.Dodge.com/vots

http://www.Jeep.com/vots

http://www.RamTrucks.com/vots

To use the VOTS, customers need to give their email address, their first name and last name (along with typical required information) to the dealer sales person when the order is being filled out. Giving the dealer your email address will enable you to receive the VIN via email once it is generated.

As you can see in the image below, you need the final eight digits of the VIN, plus your first and last name used in the dealer order to check the progress of your new Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and/or Ram.

Once customers receive their VIN, they can check in on their new addition at any time to see which of the eight production stages (example below) their "baby" is in:
Confirmation (also notified via email)

Eight Production Stages:
Production scheduled (also notified via email)
Frame
Paint
Trim
Final Inspection
Shipment (also notified via email)
Delivery

These first features are just the beginning: among planned future updates is the addition of pop-up messages for information related to specific vehicles, such as a delay in production or other changes and new information.

If, for some reason, you do not give the dealer your email address when your order is being completed, simply contact your sales person and ask him/her to add your email to the order. If you don't like to receive emails, no problem! After receiving your order confirmation and VIN, you can opt out of future dealer emails but still have access to VOTS.

Toledo Jeep Plant Adds 1,100 Jobs

Report: Chrysler planning to expand Toledo operations, add 1,100 jobs

DETROIT -- Chrysler Group LLC is planning to expand its Toledo, Ohio, Assembly Complex, adding a second shift and more than 1,100 jobs to the operation that currently builds the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro SUVs, The Toledo Blade newspaper reported today.

The $365 million investment could be the first of several major expansions at Chrysler's Toledo operations, which also include production of the Jeep Wrangler at the nearby Toledo North Plant, the Blade reported.

The automaker disclosed the plans in documents filed in a city tax application that will be discussed by local officials at a meeting tonight, the report said.

The newspaper said Chrysler officially would not confirm the application's details because a state incentive package is not finalized. But the automaker released a statement to the Blade:

"In January, 2011, Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that the company was considering a possible investment in its Toledo Assembly Complex.

"As part of the process, Chrysler Group is working with state and local governments to secure incentives that would support the business case for such an investment. However, any decision to invest in the Toledo facility would be contingent upon final approval of state and local incentives and final acceptance of all agreements by the company."

Chrysler expects the expansion to be completed by 2013, according to the tax application. It will add $36 million in payroll through 1,050 new production jobs at $14.65 per hour, and 55 management jobs at about $90,500 each annually, the Blade reported.

The documents did not say which vehicles would be assembled in the modified plant. Analysts have said up to seven more new or current vehicles could be assembled by Chrysler in Toledo, the Blade said.

Jeep 'Too Important' to be Built Anywhere but US

Marchionne insists Jeep Wrangler to stay American-made

In the wholly owned Fiat stable are its eponymous brand, along with Lancia, Abarth, Maserati and Alfa Romeo ? plus, as of relatively recently, all of the Chrysler brands. According to Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, of all of those brands, the one with the greatest global cachet is Jeep. Marchionne believes that Alfa had global chops as well, but Jeep remains "first and foremost."

And while Marchionne remains keen on creating global production synergies with his expanding automotive empire, there is at least one sacred cow. According to a new Ward's Auto report, the compulsively sweater-clad CEO has a few words that will make builders of the Jeep Wrangler in Toledo happy ? he thinks the legendary SUV's American heritage is too important to risk assembling it in any other country. This is heartening news, as recent chatter had referred to growing global demand putting a strain on the Ohio plant, leading some to think that a satellite production facility could be established elsewhere in the world.

The heat of the summer is here, leaving most of us baking in 90 degree temperatures. But we'll let you in on a secret! There's a place you can go where you can cool off plus have some fun in your Jeep® brand vehicle. On July 14, 2011, Jeep Jamboree is heading to Killington, Vermont for the 5th Killington Jeep Jamboree. With an average summer temperature of 78 degrees, this is definitely the place to be during the sweltering heat. This Jamboree takes place at the Killington Resort, the largest ski resort in the East, and located in the heart of the Green Mountains. The ski lifts aren't open, but there are ample roads and trails to keep even the most avid Jeep 4×4 owner busy for a while.

This year, the Killington Grand Resort Hotel and Spa will serve as the Jeep Jamboree event headquarters. The off-road trails are on the resort's property and feature a tremendous variety of off-road challenges. Rocks, mud, and water are all represented at every difficulty level. You'll get plenty of off-roading fun in this two-day classic Jeep Jamboree. That's not all though. The Grand Spa offers a variety of interesting and reasonably priced services for a little pampering after a long day on the trail. If you manage to get away for longer than the weekend, you can take in 18 holes at the Killington golf course. This gem of a course is designed to take advantage of the spectacular and sweeping views while offering a championship golf experience.

There are plenty of other activities for Jeep 4×4 owners who may want a little more challenge. If you have a chance, throw on your boots and spend some time hiking a portion of the Appalachian Trail which meanders through the Green Mountains. The Appalachian Trail is a public hiking trail which extends 2,155 miles from Georgia to Maine. In Vermont, the Appalachian Trail coincides with the Long Trail, a 265-mile border to border path stretching from the Massachusetts state line, through the Green Mountains, then on to the Canadian border. While you're packing the boots, you might as well go ahead and stash some camping gear in your Jeep brand vehicle and spend some time in the Green Mountain National Forest. Home to six designated wilderness areas, there will be plenty of places for you to pitch your tent and enjoy a rustic camping experience. The national forest also has a variety of picturesque automobile tours which take advantage of some stunning views and sweeping panoramas of the Green Mountains.

Only a short 50-mile drive from Killington is Montpelier, the capitol of Vermont. Established in 1781, and with a population of less than 8,000, Montpelier is the smallest state capitol in the United States. But don't let the size fool you because this small city has plenty to offer. Its small size allows for a thorough exploration in a short time. Stretch your legs after the Killington Jamboree and enjoy one of several walking tours offered by the Montpelier historical society. Nearby, the Dog River has excellent brown trout fishing opportunities.

Killington, Vermont is definitely the place to be during the hot summer, and you won't be disappointed with the great off-road challenges and numerous activities of this terrific Jeep Jamboree location.

Jeep WranglerSales up 13%, International Demand Grows

JEEP NEARS CAPACITY AS DEMAND RISES

Fiat's push for higher global sales puts Toledo factories in overdrive

Europe major market for Chrysler's Wrangler

BY LARRY P. VELLEQUETTE
BLADE BUSINESS WRITER

Steve Guerrette works on a Jeep Wrangler at Chrysler's North Assembly Complex in Toledo in November. Chrysler says Wrangler production is up 19 percent to nearly 71,000 vehicles a year. THE BLADE/DAVE ZAPOTOSKY

CHELSEA, Mich. -- Workers at Chrysler Group LLC's Toledo Assembly complex may be busy for some time to come as the automaker continues to introduce Toledo-made SUVs to a new global audience.

Michael Manley, president of the Jeep brand and the man responsible for introducing products to potential customers outside North America, said Thursday he's more than a little worried that global demand for the iconic Jeep Wrangler may soon overtake the capacity of Toledo workers to make them.

"Wrangler just continues to grow and grow and grow in international markets," said Mr. Manley, who spoke to The Blade Thursday at Chrysler's massive Chelsea, Mich., proving grounds, where the automaker showed off its lineup of 16 new and refreshed vehicles to journalists.

Under Chrysler's former German owners, Daimler AG, the Wrangler largely was relegated to its North American home field, where its sales remained strong year over year and exploded strongly in 2007 with the introduction of its four-door Unlimited model.

But when current Chrysler partner Fiat SpA assumed control of the bankrupt automaker two years ago this month, it looked to the Toledo-built Wrangler to once again lead an American invasion of foreign shores. Fiat planned to use the Jeep brand -- and the Wrangler in particular -- to boost global sales of Chrysler products worldwide.

There's just one problem: Through the first five months of this year, Wrangler sales in the United States are up 13 percent to almost 42,000 vehicles, and production of the two and four-door SUVs is up 19 percent to nearly 71,000 vehicles. The factories at Toledo Assembly have an overall annual capacity of about 150,000 vehicles.

"I know that we could sell a lot more [Wranglers] than we sell today. We just finished working with Fiat to refranchise all of our European market, which is a huge market," Mr. Manley said. "As that process is now finished and they get back to gaining some momentum, clearly Wrangler demand is going to grow in Europe."

The Blade reported last month that Chrysler plans to upgrade the powertrain in the Wrangler for 2012, adding its award-winning Pentastar V-6 engine and a new five-speed automatic transmission, a move that will increase power and fuel economy of the vehicle. Chrysler officials haven't yet confirmed the upgrades coming to the vehicle in August, but Mr. Manley said Jeep engineers continue to search for ways to upgrade Wrangler.

He said new emission regulations coming to Europe and the United States make "a stronger business case" for introducing diesel-powered Jeeps to the United States market. He predicted that consumers could see new diesel-powered offerings from the brand in the United States within "two to four years."

Jeep engineers continue to search for other ways to improve the vehicle, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

"One way we do that ? is going to events and having customers bring their cars, and I just walk around looking inside of them," said Ray Durham, vehicle line executive for rear-wheel drive SUVs. "To see what they've added, to see what work-arounds they've created for deficiencies that we didn't think about."

Mr. Durham said many Wrangler owners in the desert southwest, for example, have installed hand-sewn "cushions" above their heads to cut down the heat from the Wrangler's composite roof. Others have replaced their center storage cases with locking steel storage boxes.

"It's just little things like that," where Jeep engineers find ideas for future products, he said.

Off-Roading 101: Water and Mud

Jeep® Off-Roading 101: Water and Mud

When you own a Jeep® brand vehicle, it's hard to resist the urge to take your vehicle off-road.    We bought our Jeep vehicle to not only experience the adventure lifestyle, but also to go places without the benefit of a paved road.    Trail Rated® Jeep brand vehicles offer that opportunity.    So with the next series of articles, we'll talk about some basic off-roading techniques and how you can safely enjoy your Jeep 4×4 on the trail.  Off-roading can involve many different types of obstacles, each one presenting different challenges for both the driver and the vehicle.  Water fording and driving in mud are two obstacles that are fun and exciting if done properly and safely.

Knowing how to ford water and get through mud is a useful skill for every off-road driver.  Almost every off-roading area in the United States (including the desert) will eventually have a place where you will need to cross a stream, ford a large water obstacle, or drive through mud.    The two primary concerns for water and mud obstacles are safety and potential damage to your vehicle.

Water Obstacles:    Crossing streams and water obstacles are fun and exciting!   While you've probably seen drivers speed up and roar across a stream, it may not be the smartest thing to do in certain situations?.especially through an unknown water obstacle.    The first thing you'll need to know is your own vehicle's capability.    It is important to check your owner's manual to determine your vehicle's maximum water fording depth.   As an example, a 2010 Trail Rated® Jeep Wrangler's maximum water depth is 30 inches at speeds under 5 mph, and a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee is 20 inches for standing water and  9 inches for flowing water, both under 5 mph.   If you don't have your manual handy when you get to the water, a general rule of thumb is that water up to the bottom of the bumper is a safe depth to cross to avoid damage (but some models may be lower).    Water that is too deep can cause damage to the engine, transmission, differentials, and electronics.    Once you arrive at the water crossing, use a long stick to determine initial water depth, or get out and walk out into the stream if it is not too swift and can be done safely.  Put your vehicle in 4WD Low, drive slowly, and be ready to back off if the water gets too deep.   Watch for large rocks or holes that may appear as you cross.   It's also important to remember to keep moving at all times and not to stop mid-stream.   Never cross a water obstacle without another vehicle to assist with recovery equipment if needed.     After crossing, use your brakes lightly until they dry out.  If necessary have your vehicle inspected to check for water in the differential or transmission.

Mud:   Usually, if there is water present, there will also be mud.   Mud can also take us by surprise as it can sometimes be camouflaged by other debris.   Or?.maybe you just want to go mudding!   Either way, mud can be a fun challenge on an off-road trail.    Unlike water (where you can sometimes see the depth), the depth of mud can be hard to judge.   You can get seriously stuck in mud, so it's essential to make sure you have recovery equipment and another vehicle close by to pull you out if needed.   Do not proceed if there are no tracks on the other side of the mud hole.    The important thing about mud is to make sure you're in 4WD low, avoid excessively spinning the tires, and KEEP MOVING.   Beware of the middle of deep ruts where you could easily high-center.  If you start to get bogged down, slightly turn your steering wheel from side to side to gain more traction while continuing forward momentum.     Once you get back to civilization, use a pressure washer to clean the underside of your vehicle to get rid of excess weight and prevent corrosion.

Water and mud can be fun and challenging off-roading obstacles.    By keeping these tips in mind, you can enjoy your Trail Rated® Jeep vehicle as it was meant to be used without compromising safety and without damaging your vehicle.

Modification

Aftermarket ? Usually refers to parts that are not installed at the factory by the manufacturer.  There are a number of aftermarket companies among Jeep 4×4 enthusiasts.   Chrysler Group's in-house Mopar brand also produces aftermarket parts and accessories to customize your Jeep vehicle.

Built ? If you're hanging out with an enthusiast crowd, you may hear the term 'built rig' being thrown around. 'Built' refers to a modified vehicle that is in some cases more capable than it was in stock form.

Drivetrain

Locking Differentials ? Often referred to as 'lockers', these differentials greatly improve capability in low-traction environments. When needed, lockers will essentially 'lock' both the right and left wheels of an axle together, providing additional traction.

Solid or Straight Axle ? A solid axle suspension that acts as a single unit, including the driveshafts. The advantage of a solid-axle, also referred to as a 'Live axle', is that ground clearance below the axle remains the same despite the height difference that could be experienced when going over obstacles such as rocks or logs.  Solid axles also help in gaining articulation, allowing wheels to stay on the ground in staggered terrain.  In addition, the solid axle is fairly simple, resulting in increased capability, strength and durability.

Tires

Traction ? Can be most easily described as the level of friction between two surfaces.  The more you have, the better your Jeep vehicle will perform.  Slipping tires would be an example of losing traction.

Tire Bead ? The tire bead refers to the edge of the tire that seats into the wheel rim, creating an air tight seal.  When the tire is inflated and the seal is created, this is referred to as 'seating the bead'.

Beadlock ? In many off-road situations, the bead of a tire may be compromised.  Climbing obstacles becomes easier when tire pressure is lower than what is needed for driving on public roads.  The disadvantage of lower tire pressure is that this also greatly compromises the bead.  A common off-road device known as a 'bead lock' holds the tire to the wheel, forcing the bead to hold load and therefore maintaining tire pressure.

Suspension

Ground Clearance ? The distance from flat ground to the lowest point on the underside of the vehicle. With greater ground clearance, your Jeep 4×4 can clear taller obstacles.  When hitting beginner-level trails, the stock ground clearance of a Jeep Wrangler will suffice; try out a more advanced trail and you may need to modify your vehicle.

Articulation ? Described as the amount a suspension system can combine compression on one side and droop on the other for each axle. Articulation is experienced when climbing over obstacles such as rocks or logs, where one axle may experience a different height to climb than the other, creating an uneven suspension compression.  Jeep vehicles feature impressive articulation, allowing for easy climbs over obstacles.

In this installment of the Outfitting Your Jeep® vehicle blog series, we're going to talk about some of the auxiliary lighting options for your Jeep brand vehicle.  If you have any of the new 2011 Jeep Wrangler models, you are already familiar with one of the types of auxiliary lighting because bumper fog lamps are standard equipment.   But if your older Wrangler or Jeep model did not have this option, you may want to consider additional exterior lighting to enhance your Jeep 4×4 lifestyle experience.  Off-road lighting is specifically designed with rugged weatherproof construction and is made to endure difficult off-roading conditions.   While many people add extra lighting to enjoy night off-roading or to improve visibility in foul weather conditions, it is equally wonderful at illuminating a great campsite in the backcountry.  Whatever the reason, additional lighting can add personality and real function to any Jeep brand vehicle.

Choosing exterior auxiliary lighting may appear to be a daunting task; so hopefully, this blog will help you sort through some of your options.  First, do you need additional lighting because you want to off-road at night or do you live in an area with foul weather?  Do you like to go hunting and fishing in the dark or do you just like the way extra lights look on your Jeep vehicle?   You'll need to decide on the use for your additional lights as this can sometimes be the deciding factor in where they are mounted.     Some of the mounting options include:  The front bumper, a light bar on the front bumper, light bars on the top, or mounted on the windshield frame.   Each location has its advantages depending on the purpose of the lighting.

What kinds of lights are available?   Basically, there are flood lights, driving lights, and fog lights.  Flood lights are used to illuminate large areas?.like that nice camping spot you found in the backcountry.   They are typically mounted either on a light bar on top of the vehicle or on a windshield frame mount.    Driving lights are good for seeing off-road obstacles at long distances and can be mounted either on a light bar on the bumper or also on a windshield frame mount.  Fog lights are used for poor weather conditions such as rain, fog, or mist, or anywhere you may need additional lighting for safe driving.  Fog lights are sometimes amber in color and are mounted low to help illuminate the road in front of the vehicle.

The location you choose for your lights will greatly depend on the intended use.  Light bars mounted on the front bumper are very popular, and depending on how many lights you desire, there are a variety of styles and designs to choose from.  Windshield frame mounts are also popular.  The lights are easily installed with an after-market mounting bracket directly to the outside corners of the windshield.  This is a low-cost lighting option that adds a great look to your Jeep brand vehicle.  A light bar mounted on the top of the vehicle is a great option for the person looking for maximum lighting capability for their Jeep 4×4.  This method is very popular for highly modified vehicles that need maximum lighting for extreme off-roading conditions.   After you decide on the type of lights and where to mount them, check out www.Mopar.com for all their lighting products and accessories.

Be sure to check your state laws on using auxiliary lighting during highway driving.  Also, high-powered lighting systems may need additional electrical components such as relays which could require professional installation.  No matter what light system you choose, additional auxiliary lighting can enhance your Jeep brand lifestyle experience and help illuminate your world.

Interview with Klaus Busse, Head of Interior Design at Jeep

Executive Interview: Klaus Busse, Head of Interior Design

KlausBusse 200923 328x494 Executive Interview: Klaus Busse, Head of Interior Design Klaus Busse Jeep Interview Interior Design interior Executive Interview executive design company photo

As a part of our ongoing Jeep® executive interview series, we had a chance to sit down with Klaus Busse who heads up the interior design teams for all Chrysler Group vehicles including the Jeep brand. Klaus is passionate about his job and empowers his team of enthusiast designers by providing them the vision to do what they do best and know in their hearts is the right thing to do.

Why/how did you get started in designing of vehicles?  Tell us about yourself.

KB: I grew up in Germany and as a child I had a poster of a Lamborghini Countach in my room and always loved cars. While in math class, I would sketch cars on my notebook when I was bored. In my professional career, I started out as an exterior designer with Mercedes Benz, and came over to the US during the DaimlerChrysler era. When the companies split, I decided to stay with Chrysler because of all the great things I saw happening here. I wanted to move into designing of the interior of the vehicle because it's underwhelming when you sit inside of a vehicle whose interior is not designed well and doesn't live up to the same passion of the exterior.  Therefore I slowly transitioned into that new role and space. I soon realized there are so many opportunities and now a new culture at Chrysler Group has emerged that will take interiors to a new level and beyond.

As an interior designer for the Jeep brand, what elements inspire you and your team?

KB: The Jeep brand story is a great story of liberation.  Because of this, and the heritage behind the brand, it is easy to be inspired.  I tell my team to look from within, and to imagine all of the places you can only go to in a Jeep vehicle, like Moab, and places deep within parts of Alaska and Africa.  Additionally, I tell my team to avoid looking at design cues from two years ago, because by using trends from the past, we will always be chasing the trend instead of setting the trend and leading the pack.

We know the Wrangler customer is different than the Grand Cherokee buyer.  As a designer for the Jeep brand, does that present challenges since "one size does not fit all'?

KB: It's the opposite ? it's a fantastic opportunity as a Jeep interior designer because we have so many ideas and not all of them fit into one product. The Jeep brand with its great range of products such as the "climbing tool" like the Jeep Wrangler to the "ultimate luxury" SUV like the Jeep Grand Cherokee grants interior designers the freedom to push the envelope in different directions while always keeping the Jeep brand customer expectations in mind.

Can you discuss specific interior designs on the Wrangler that are more in-tune with the vehicle Off-Roading DNA?

KB: For the Jeep Wrangler it's a bit of a challenge. The proportions of the interior are very small in comparison to the Jeep Grand Cherokee which has a lot of acreage and real estate that you can play with.  The Wrangler isn't about aesthetics but more about function.  We created an interior that is all about function ? due to the overall proportions, there is not much room to waste.  We've made sure there are high-quality materials that are durable and washable but still have a human touch to them.

It seems the corporation has really stepped up their game with totally redesigned interiors that are more refined with soft-touch surfaces throughout the cabin. As a designer, what input did you have in working with suppliers on interior surface materials?

KB: We had a great deal of input into the process with suppliers and it makes Chrysler Group very powerful moving forward because we are becoming so involved.  In the past, I've worked with companies that would craft a beautiful design and then just "throw it over the wall" to engineering and keep their fingers crossed that they would execute it. What we have right now is a true partnership with engineering where if you come to one of our meetings you wouldn't know who the engineers are and who the designers are.  Instead, you'll see real teamwork between the engineering and design groups where we complement each other's ideas and fight for good products.  We specify materials together with engineering; we push for fit and finish together.  For example, look at the A/C outlets on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee; those are probably the best in the market.  The veins that direct the airflow don't bend when you touch them with your finger whereas the plastic in the previous model was very soft.   Those of us in the design office along with our friends in engineering specified the material together and now it's super robust and the fit and finish are significantly improved.  We're now expecting top quality, which may have driven some of our suppliers' crazy because we were not happy with what they gave us in the past. They were not used to this demand from us as we wanted the same quality you find in luxury vehicles.  It is more about collaborating with suppliers these days to not reject parts, but to work together to gain respect and trust, and come to agreed upon expectations together.

What changes can we expect in the look, feel and functionality of Jeep brand interiors in the coming years?

KB: There are still a lot of great opportunities in the coming years, but we can't say too much because we want to surprise our consumers.  However I can tell you that we will be having a lot of fun designing the interior features of vehicles that fit in between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee nameplates in the near future.

Can the 2011 Jeep Wrangler really get wet insideIf so, is the interior completely waterproof?

KB: You can utilize the interior features in the same manner as you were able to do in the 2009 and 2010 model years.  However, with today's electronic systems, that might be a better question for your upcoming interview with the engineering team.

Would you consider two models of the Wrangler, one for off-road enthusiasts (more rugged) and one for the rest of your consumer base (a little fancier)?

KB: We were trying to bridge that gap when we introduced the 4-door Jeep Wrangler.  The Wrangler Sport and Rubicon are more rugged trim levels that stay true to the Jeep Wrangler "roots."  Alternatively, the design cues of the Wrangler Sahara were crafted to satisfy the premium end model customer that wants ruggedness with a few more luxurious amenities.

Jeep Celebrates 70th Anniversary at Moab, Utah

Jeep celebrates 70th birthday in Moab

In celebration of 70 years of rugged offroad tradition, Jeep took a trip to Moab, Utah in early June. The caravan included 17 special vehicles to showcase the past, present and possibilities of the legendary four-wheeler.

Honoring the past were seven classic Jeeps that recapture the growth and evolution of the brand from the small reconnaissance vehicle that replaced the motorcycle and horse for scouting missions and helped the Allies win the Second World War through its development as a go-anywhere-anytime icon known around the world. Shown in the wilderness they were meant for were the 1944 Willys-Overland "Jeep" MB, 1945 Willys-Overland Jeep CJ-2A, 1949 Willys-Overland Jeep Station Wagon, 1963 Jeep Wagoneer, 1984 Jeep Cherokee, 1987 Jeep Wrangler and the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Highlighting the present were the the Jeep 70th Anniversary Edition models ? Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Compass, Patriot, Wrangler/Wrangler Unlimited ? photographed against a a backdrop of red rock and the glistening waters of the Colorado River.

Showcasing the possibilities in a true Jeep setting were five customized Jeep vehicles fresh from the 45th annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari. The lineup of Jeep "image" vehicles included the Wrangler Pork Chop, Wrangler Renegade, Compass Canyon, Cherokee Overland and the Grand Cherokee Off-Road Edition.

How NOT to Import a Jeep from the Phillipenes

How (not) to import a stainless-steel Jeep from the Philippines

Peter Greenberg's stainless-steel Jeep was held hostage by U.S. Customs for three years. PETER GREENBERG
Peter Greenberg's stainless-steel Jeep was held hostage by U.S. Customs for three years.

By PETER GREENBERG, CBS NEWS TRAVEL EDITOR on 6/09/2011

The year was 1984. The place was Manila, capital of the Philippines. I was there to conduct a formal sit-down interview with President Ferdinand Marcos at Malacañang palace. It was to be a wide-ranging interview on foreign affairs, political insurgency and democracy in Asia.

The interview was moving along well when the president was interrupted to take an important phone call. At that moment, I happened to look out the window and see the most unusual vehicle parked in the palace driveway. It got my attention not just because of the way it looked but because of the way it gleamed.

"Mr. President," I asked, pointing out the window to the street and the shining car below, "What is that?"

He smiled. "Oh," he replied, "would you want one?"

It was a completely handmade, stainless-steel, four-passenger MacArthur-style Jeep. Everything was steel--the body, the seats, the roll bar.

I told the president I couldn't accept it as a gift but that I would be happy to purchase one. Marcos called in an aide and, in an instant, ordered one built for me. Before I knew it, I was the proud owner of this curious car.

I wrote out a check for the car, about $9,000, which included the frame and the body only. No engine, because I was convinced that it could never enter the United States and pass EPA requirements. Then came the shipping, another $2,500.

Four months later, back in California, I received notice that my shipment had arrived in San Pedro and that I needed to go pick it up.

U.S. Customs had never seen such a car. Agents didn't know what it was. They assumed I was a car importer and in the automobile business. I was presented with a U.S. Department of Transportation crash-test-requirements manual and told when I was going to be scheduled for a hearing. A hearing? I tried to explain that I had just bought a body and frame as a collector. They wanted me to crash the car as a prototype, convinced I was trying to import new cars to the States.

I tried to plead my case, but Customs agents were unmoved. Next, I was told that the car was going to be impounded and I had to post a $30,000 bond. I was given no choice. I could appeal, but that process could take years.

For the next three years, I appealed and nothing happened. The car sat in some Customs warehouse. At least it didn't rust.

During that time, Marcos was ousted from power and was living in exile in Hawaii. I got the first interview with him after he fled Manila. And during that interview, he asked, of course, how I was enjoying his Jeep.

"It's doing fine in California," I told him, sparing him the sordid details.

Then one day, the planets suddenly aligned. I found myself, in a totally unrelated news assignment, interviewing the head of U.S. Customs. During the interview, he told me about the agency's push to become more "consumer friendly." It was a wonderful opening, and I couldn't resist. I brought up the painful subject of the storied Jeep.

"I can't believe we would do this," he said.

"Well, sir," I replied, "your agents did." He promised me action.

He kept his word, and 24 hours later I received a call from Customs telling me that there had been an administrative mistake and that they would release my Jeep to me and return my bond on one condition. They had inspected the vehicle and determined that while the body was approved to enter the United States, the frame was not. They had discovered that the frame really was an old U.S. Army MacArthur Jeep and had been spot-welded so many times that it was deemed both U.S. property and unsafe on the road.

A compromise was reached. Two weeks later, in Sunland, Calif., at 7:30 in the morning, I assembled with U.S. Customs officials and assorted onlookers at an auto junkyard. A truck hauled the Jeep in. The frame was then removed from the body and, under Customs supervision, it was crushed. The body was returned to me, I got my bond back (with no interest), and I now was the proud owner of a presidential, handmade, stainless-steel--body.

Working with a mechanic, I located a 1953 Willys frame and a 1955 Willys reconditioned V8 and went to work. Two weeks later and four years after my initial interview with Marcos in Manila, I was once again the proud owner of a presidential, handmade, stainless-steel Jeep.

More than a quarter of a century later, I still have it. It sits in my garage, still gleaming. It is licensed, registered and legal, but it has never been driven--not even once. It's more of an art piece than a car and it will probably stay that way--a little piece of history that all started in the presidential palace in Manila some 29 years ago.

Detriot News Review the Wrangler Unlimited

Last Updated: June 02. 2011 3:17PM

Scott Burgess

2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited blazes trails

Moab, Utah

If the Donner Party had Jeeps, they never would have found themselves on the menu.

Jeeps can eat up just about any trail.

During a recent rock crawl through Utah, the state where the actual Donner wagon train hit its first delay of many on the move west, the Jeeps never got stuck. The complete Jeep lineup from the Compass to the Grand Cherokee made child's play of rocks, ridgelines and mountain passes.

My particular test vehicle, the new and improved 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, never stalled, stuttered or paused at any big boulder challenge in front of it. It was almost stoic as it glided up rock faces or down potential disasters for other vehicles. Four-wheel low gobbles up tough terrain, leaving any driver feeling as if he can conquer anything.

More importantly, the Wrangler Unlimited has been spruced up with a major interior overhaul that should appeal to people whose toughest off-road test is a two-track to the family cabin. The idea is pretty straightforward and somewhat the same as when Jeep introduced the Wrangler more than 20 years ago and the Unlimited five years ago: Attract more customers.

The Unlimited arrived in 2007 as the four-door, long wheelbase Wrangler. Most people at the time said, "Duh, where has this been?" It opened up a whole new market to Jeep enthusiasts who grew up and got themselves a family. The two-door Wrangler, while iconic and fun, could do just about everything but carry more than two adults. The Unlimited changed that.

Comfort had been issue

And while every Jeep nearly lived up to its long-built reputation for off-road prowess, its interiors lacked the comfort and completeness it should have. The plastic was hard, the features sparse. Roughing it may come into play in the wilderness, but it shouldn't on your commute to work or grocery getting, or cruising along on the highway. We're a spoiled bunch nowadays and for most of us, roughing it is when the cable goes out during a lightning storm.

So the interior was rebuilt with a new instrument panel, new seats and a much cleaner look with upgrades in materials and fit and finish.

The work pays dividends.

There are new comfort features, such as heated seats, and cosmetic additions, such as new instrument gauges. There are also new storage spaces and a lockable center console, which is handy when the top is down (taking the cloth top down is still difficult, though; it requires two people and a good five minutes to unzip, unsnap and pop out the different brackets and holders).

Other new features, such as the 115-volt outlet, was a true Godsend during the trip as every camera in Utah needs to be recharged often because everywhere you turn is another postcard shot.

The combination of practicality and sophistication bodes well with the Unlimited.

The current U-Connect system, which Jeep will upgrade to the next generation in the coming years, is still behind other competitors. The USB connection mounts on the face of the stereo instead of in a more reasonable location, such as the center console or the base of the center stack. Additionally, the Unlimited I tested could not play music directly off my iPhone4. I had to plug the USB cable into the phone and then run an auxiliary cable from the phone to the stereo. It makes the front of the stereo in the Jeep look like the back of my stereo at home, which no one should have to look at.

So is the interior improved? Absolutely. It just feels cleaner, well built and complete. And while it will easily carry four adults comfortably to the opera or other city activity, the Unlimited felt more at home with its interior covered in red dust. And if you don't need the second row for people, the seats fold up nicely and create 86.75 cubic feet of storage space.

Smooth, quiet ride

But most people won't get out into the wild with the Unlimited ? and they'll enjoy it just the same on the highway. Jeep added a few acoustic improvements to make the ride quieter, though those are difficult tests when the roof down.

The ride, however, is surprisingly smooth on the highway. The 3.8-liter V-6 engine produces 202 horsepower and 237 pound-feet of torque, which is more than enough power on any surface. The gas mileage is nothing great ? though considering the Unlimited's abilities, it's pretty good at 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. Scale a mountain and it's likely to be a little worse.

But where the Unlimited lives, mileage is not the most important feature. There is a reason there are three skid plates on this Jeep ? rocks can do all kinds of damage to the transfer case, gas tank and transmission oil pan.

The Rubicon model I tested, which includes a two-speed transfer case and front and rear axle lockers, electronic sway bar disconnect and 32-inch off-road tires, should only be bought by someone who intends to ride on a lot of roads less traveled.

The front lockers turn this vehicle into a bulldozer, ready to climb through almost anything. (Really, few people "need" this kind of capability, though Jeep will sell you one just in case you think you "need" one.)

Really, though, Jeep says something few other vehicles can. It projects a lifestyle. Few vehicles can be identified by their brand name as easily as the Jeep Wrangler.

People who know nothing about cars or trucks know a Jeep and could pick one out in a parking lot long before they remember the Lexus RX400h is the hybrid version. Many little boys are known to have a Jeep gene, which tests their ability to try and break every toy they own.

And the Unlimited manages to add two doors and still keep all of its iconic looks without sacrificing its abilities. Those big round headlights, the seven slotted grille, the big wheels and high ride all remain.

The Unlimited can do nearly anything a two-door Wrangler can manage.

But it's just a little bit nicer.

How Important is the Next Jeep Liberty to Chrysler? Very.

How important is the next Liberty to Chrysler? Very

The next generation Jeep Liberty must be a smash hit with so many different constituencies that Jeep designers run a high risk of failure by committee by trying to serve them all.

Automotive News -- May 31, 2011 - 3:32 pm ET

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Executives from Chrysler Group and President Barack Obama will take a joint victory lap Friday at the automaker's massive Toledo assembly complex to celebrate Chrysler's survival and its full repayment of $7.6 billion in government loans.

But paying off taxpayers six years early might seem easy compared with the product challenges Chrysler faces as it designs the third generation of its Jeep Liberty -- one of the first North American vehicles that will ride on the Fiat-derived CUSW architecture.

How important is Liberty 3.0 to Chrysler's long-term fate? Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne knows all too well.

"That vehicle has to be perfect," he told reporters in January at the Detroit auto show. And he's right.

It's not just that Chrysler needs to be a leader again in mid-sized SUVs -- a segment it dominated for a decade with the much-loved and iconic Jeep Cherokee. It's also that Liberty 3.0 must be a smash hit with so many different constituencies that Jeep designers run a high risk of failure by committee by trying to serve them all.

Skeptical eye

Jeep enthusiasts are already looking to Liberty 3.0 with a skeptical eye -- though none has seen it yet -- because they worry a Fiat-derived Jeep might be a repeat of the Daimler-era Jeep Compass: seven slots in the grill, round headlights and no off-road chops.

Given the choice, most trail-riders would still choose a 10-year-old Cherokee, with its solid front axle, light weight and great low-end torque, over the current version of the Liberty.

Jeep enthusiasts yearn for a four-door Jeep that is as capable off-road as the Wrangler but more comfortable on-road than your average pickup and more practical as a daily driver.

Oh -- and they want a U.S. diesel engine option too.

If they get all those things, they'll continue to throw money at those Jeep-brand strollers and luggage sets and happily burn even more "Jeep" tattoos onto their bodies. But, hey, no pressure.

Meanwhile, Chrysler/Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne and Jeep brand boss Michael Manley know that Liberty 3.0 has to be a worldwide volume vehicle, one that will drive the Jeep brand back into Europe, Asia and South America while keeping its bread buttered in the United States and Canada.

Manley, who also holds responsibility for the Chrysler Group's international sales efforts, understands well that the Jeep brand is his best calling card overseas, where "Jeep" elicits images of brave soldiers saving a world from fascism, and "Dodge" is something you do to avoid being killed in heavy traffic.

Wide appeal

That means Liberty 3.0 -- or Cherokee 8.0 in overseas terms -- has to have road manners at least the equal of other vehicles in the segment such as the Honda CR-V and the Toyota Rav4. And it needs a fuel-efficiency rating that won't decimate sales every time the price of gasoline spikes, along with a size, interior and price that appeal to buyers from Montana to Montenegro to Moscow.

And if that weren't enough pressure on Jeep designers in Auburn Hills, Mich., the fact that Liberty 3.0 will be among the first of at least eight new, high-volume Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles that will ride on Fiat's CUSW architecture raises the design stakes even more. For if Liberty 3.0 flops, for whatever reason, at least some of that stink might stick to those as-yet-to-be-revealed high-volume vehicles, like the next-generation D-segment sedans due out in 2013.

And that will be a long-term profit killer.

So when the president and Marchionne visit Toledo this week for their financial victory lap, pay attention to those vehicles parked in the background and know that a team of engineers in Auburn Hills is working hard, attempting to thread a needle with a two-ton SUV.

Chrysler Developing Engine That Runs on Diesel and Gasoline

Chrysler Developing Engine That Burns Gasoline and Diesel

Minivan-1-560

Chrysler and the U.S. Department of Energy are developing a radical prototype engine that burns a combination of gasoline and diesel fuels that could help Chrysler and other automakers meet future fuel economy targets, according to a presentation given by Chrysler during the DOE's 2011 Merit Review in Washington D.C.

The small displacement 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder multifuel engine promises up to a 25 percent improvement in city and highway fuel economy for a Chrysler minivan, compared to a 2009 4.0-liter V-6, while maintaining similar performance. That could mean that the new engine could reach 31 mpg on the highway in a Town & Country.

The 4.0-liter V-6 in the 2009 Chrysler minivan was rated 17/25 mpg city/highway and 251 horsepower and 259 pounds-feet of torque.

Until now, gasoline and diesel have been considered mutually exclusive automotive fuels because of their unique chemical and combustion properties. Gasoline engines use a so-called Otto combustion cycle, in which a combination of gas and air are mixed and compressed in an engine's cylinders and ignited using a spark plug to produce power. Diesel engines follow the so-called diesel combustion cycle, where air is compressed to such a high degree that friction causes injected diesel fuel to ignite without a spark. Higher compression and greater energy density per gallon is what gives diesel about a 20 percent to 30 percent fuel economy advantage over gasoline.

Minivan-2-560

Chrysler's bi-fuel engine design calls for a three-valve head with two direct-injection gasoline fuel injectors and a single diesel injector. Two turbos ? one high-pressure and one low-pressure ? will provide two-stage turbocharging to meet boost requirements supporting a high compression ratio for power and fuel economy. Exhaust gas cooling and metered injection of diesel fuel will be used to control knock, or the premature detonation of the gasoline fuel-air mixture that can damage an engine under high compression loads.

"The addition (and timing) of diesel fuel has a significant impact on burn rate," the presentation noted.

In this respect, Chrysler's gasoline-diesel engine appears to be following a similar approach to Ford's prototype bi-fuel engine, which used a mixture of gasoline and ethanol. The practical limitation of Ford's engine would be the limited availability of ethanol in the real world, whereas diesel has widespread distribution across the U.S.

Minivan-3-560

Both engines are also practically limited by the need for separate fuel tanks so the fuels aren't mixed before combustion. In the real world, it's not hard to imagine the extra hassle posed by filling up a vehicle at both the gas and diesel pumps.

Chrysler's demonstration vehicle will show several other fuel-saving features, including shutting off fuel to the engine during vehicle braking, mild hybrid start-stop engine shutoff at stoplights and using waste engine heat to generate electricity to power some vehicle accessories instead of drawing accessory power from the engine.

The multifuel project is being funded with $30 million; Chrysler and its partners ? including Delphi, FEV, Ohio State University and Argonne National Laboratory ? are putting up $15.5 million, and the Department of Energy is putting up $14.5 million. It runs through April 2013.

Minivan-4

The DOE published the full set of presentations from the 2011 Merit Review last week. We've asked Chrysler for comment about the project by e-mail but haven't heard back yet.

From hot dogs to Jeeps, President Obama sees what Toledo makes

Fortified by chili dogs from Rudy's Hot Dogs, President Barack Obama arrived at Chrysler Group LLC's Toledo Assembly complex Friday afternoon to herald the auto industry's rebound after a government bailout and announce a deal for Fiat to buy the Treasury's remaining stake in Chrysler.

His visit coincides with the release of a dismal economic report that showed an uptick in national unemployment.

The president tried to remain upbeat as he began delivering his remarks at the plant.

"I know there are a lot of hard-working people here," he said, noting some of their favorite haunts like Rudy's and Zinger's as places that share the economic impact of their employment.

Mr. Obama touted the resurgence of the U.S. auto industry and credited his federal bailout, which assured the survival of Chrysler and General Motors Co. Both automakers filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009 to enact severe cutbacks and other changes. Now, both firms are profitable.

"What would life be like here in Toledo if you didn't make these cars?" he asked the audience.

Prior to his speech, the President toured a portion of the Wrangler assembly line where its instrument panels is installed and its distinctive front grille is attached. Touring with him was Mauro Pino, plant manager of Toledo Assembly complex.

Among the three dozen workers who greeted him was Nicole Jones, who with another worker was wearing a red T-shirt that said "President Obama" on the front and "Thank you" on the back.

"Those are awesome t-shirts," Mr. Obama said.

After an eight-minute tour, the President posed for a group photo with workers. He then moved to a podium to begin his remarks to more than 400 workers and others in attendance inside the factory, including Chrysler Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne and community, political, and labor dignitaries.

Mr. Obama told the employees that when they make cars, they were "sticking up for this way of life ... showing the world that American manufacturing and American industry is back."

He said the government's intervention into making sure the auto industry did not experience a financial meltdown was evident in the local workforce.

"Toledo, you showed that this was a good investment, betting on American workers," the President said. He described them as people who "recapture the toughness of who we are, the builders and the doers."

U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo), who had met Mr. Obama at Toledo Express Airport and traveled with him to the plant, echoed those sentiments. "Our work force is the best, there is no question and today they were rewarded for being the best," she said.

After his speech, the President entered the Wrangler plant's paint shop area, greeting first-shift workers as they left for the day.

For eight minutes he shook hands, with several workers happy to see him. Worker John Dandar pulled out two photographs that he asked the president to sign. The photos were taken when Mr. Obama was in the Toledo area campaigning in 2008.

He told Mr. Obama: "Thanks for saving my job." The President responded: "I appreciate your service, Mr. Dandar."

The President then left the Chrysler plant and made a brief stop at Fred's Pro Hardware on Stickney Avenue and Pearl, where the President purchased two pairs green garden gloves.

He was asked by an employee about the gloves, and he said, referring to his wife Michelle, "She doesn't let me near the garden."

VIDEO: President Obama's speech at the Toledo Assembly Complex.

Matthew Wamsley, 40, manager at Fred's Pro Hardware, was thrilled when the president walked through the doors of his business.

Mr.  Wamsley was unaware the president was visiting until "five minutes before he walked in the door."

"It was exciting. I was in the military so I was close to a president before [President Clinton], but never this close," Mr. Wamlsey said.

The store, a quarter mile south of the Chrysler plant, is frequented by Chrysler employees. Workers said the store would have been hurt badly had Chrysler gone out of business.

Afterward, the President crossed the street, where a crowd of about 150 people had gathered spontaneously. They greeted him enthusiastic.

James Johnson, 55, shouted to others in the crowd, "I shook the President's hand, I'm not going to wash this hand, ever." He said, "I'm 55, and that's the first time a shook a president's hand."

After the hardware store stop, Mr. Obama's motorcade got back on the Ohio Turnpike and headed in the direction of the airport.

At 3:02 p.m., the President boarded Air Force One, which began to taxi by 3:09 p.m. and lifted off by 3:14 p.m.

Mr. Obama's visit had begun when Air Force One landed at Toledo Express Airport at 11:28 a.m. Friday. He stepped off the airliner with Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) and was greeted by Toledo Mayor Mike Bell, Miss Kaptur, and others.

The President walked over to a small crowd, signing autographs and shaking hands of the select group of Toledo-area friends and family members of people employed by the White House, the Secret Service, and the Air Force were allowed on the tarmac for the arrival.

Carla Firestone, Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority spokesman, said it was a traditional gathering allowed for the arrival of Air Force One.

Among the invited crowd in the greeting area was 10-year-old Blake Borowski, a fourth-grader from Whitehouse, Ohio. He was brought to the event, with his brothers, by their father. Standing at the fence, Blake was among the first hands the President shook.

"We are thrilled to be in Toledo, especially with this great weather," Mr. Obama said in response to a reporter's question. "We're going to go see some Jeeps being made."

The President got into his motorcade about eight minutes after stepping off of the plane. He headed east on the Ohio Turnpike and then north on I-75.

En route to the Chrysler plant that makes Jeep Wranglers, Mr. Obama stopped at 12:15 p.m. a Rudy's Hot Dog restaurant on Sylvania Avenue, surprising owners Harry and Andreas Dionyssiou as well as about 20-25 customers. The workers inside screamed with excitement upon seeing the President.

A crowd outside cheered as Mr. Obama walked into the restaurant.

Harry Dionyssiou shook the president's hand while Mr. Obama ordered two chili dogs with onions, mustard, cheese, as well as French fries and a bowl of chili. Mr. Obama also bought meals for Sen. Sherrod Brown, Rep. Marcy Kaptur, and Mayor Mike Bell, who accompanied him.

Harry Dionyssiou said,  "How wonderful. Girls, fix him one of each."

Mr. Obama jokingly chastised Miss Kaptur for ordering ketchup on her hot dogs. "As an aficionado of hot dogs," he said, "you should never put ketchup on a hot dog."

He then plunked down two $20 bills to pay the tab.

Regina Weaks, a longtime Rudy's employee, said, "I was very surprised when he walked in the door, although I got a little suspicious when I saw the 20 cop cars in our parking lot."

The President stood and talked with customers while he was eating his hot dogs. Mr. Bell urged him to have Faygo red pop.

Sen. Brown introduced him to customer Kelly Nelson and said, "This is Kelly Nelson, she may need a note to get back to work because she's going to be late."

The President also greeted two of the customers from a Chrysler supplier Faureicia, which makes parts for the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro at Chrysler's Toledo Assembly complex. He asked the two unidentified men if the company was a Jeep supplier and they said yes. "Keep up the good work," Mr. Obama said.

He left the restaurant after about a half hour and arrived at the Chrysler plant at 12:50 p.m. A crowd of about 75 people ? mostly United Auto Workers ? had been gathered since about noon near the Chrysler plant off Stickney Drive.

"If it wasn't for [Mr. Obama's] faith and confidence in the auto industry, we wouldn't be here," said Ray Wood, president of the UAW Local 14.

"This is an opportunity for us to thank him, even if he just looks out the window when he comes by."

Some members of the group were wearing red T-shirts and carrying signs that said "Vote Democrat" and "Union Blood is Thicker than Tea."

Matt Wise, a Chrysler security guard, wore an "Obama changing history" T-shirt under his security guard uniform.

Mr. Obama possibly may make two or three other stops, and will depart from the airport by late afternoon. The events are not open to the public.

The president also is expected to talk about an agreement announced Thursday night for Italian automaker Fiat SpA to buy the U.S. government's stake in Chrysler.

Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine Friday criticized Mr. Obama's "victory lap" in Toledo by noting the newly released national unemployment numbers, which showed sparse hiring and an increase in the rate to 9.1 percent in May, up from 9 percent the month before.

"Today's economic news further underscores the fact that unemployed workers in Ohio aren't looking for a presidential campaign stop, they need jobs," Mr. DeWine said.

Toledo mayor Mike Bell greets President Barack Obama at Toledo Express Airport on Friday. At right is Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown. Toledo mayor Mike Bell greets President Barack Obama at Toledo Express Airport on Friday. At right is Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown.

"With one in 10 Toledo residents out of a job and national unemployment again on the rise, Barack Obama would best serve the city, and our state, by joining [House] Speaker [John] Boehner [of Ohio] in offering serious proposals which focus upon deficit spending restraint and domestic job creation."

As the Republican presidential field begins to take shape, the White House is keenly aware that Obama's handling of the economy generates some of his highest public disapproval ratings.

White House officials said the overall trend was in the right direction compared to the job losses that were occurring a couple years ago, playing down this month's poor report as a bump in the road.

"Every time we look at those numbers we don't get too excited by what those numbers say, or we don't get too disappointed by what those numbers say. What we're looking at is the overall trend," spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters traveling with the president on Air Force One. "If you look at where we've come from, the turnaround is pretty dramatic."

The Bush and Obama administrations spent $80 billion to bail out General Motors and Chrysler and help guide them through bankruptcy. The Obama administration says it will recoup more than 80 percent of that and Obama intends to defend the bailouts as money well spent.

A report by the president's National Economic Council this week said the taxpayers' loss from the bailout will be about $14 billion. The Treasury Department initially had expected much greater losses.

Chrysler last week announced it would be paying off its remaining loans to the U.S. and Canadian governments ahead of schedule. And late Thursday, Treasury announced a deal to sell its remaining stake in Chrysler for $560 million to Italian automaker Fiat. That still means that of the $12.5 billion that the Treasury Department used to bail out Chrysler, about $1.3 billion will not be recouped, Treasury said.

GM received $49.5 billion in the U.S. bailout, and the federal government has recovered about half of that by selling a portion of its ownership stake in the company. It intends to sell its remaining 26.5 percent share of the company at a later time.

GM, Chrysler and Ford had been reporting significant increases in sales, but the industry this week reported a falloff in May.

The industry resurgence is one of the few positive notes in an economy that had been growing moderately but has now hit a listless patch. Unemployment had been dropping from a high of 10.1 percent in October of 2009. But it now has experienced back-to-back increases since it hit 8.9 percent in March.

The auto industry is also a major employer in presidential battleground states like Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Missouri, all of them important for Obama's re-election prospects in 2012. The industry recovery gives Obama the opportunity to distinguish himself from Republicans who had criticized the government's intervention.

Among them was Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who had called for Chrysler and GM to go through bankruptcy without government assistance. Romney on Friday defended his position. "The right process for an enterprise in trouble is not to be given money by the taxpayers in a bailout," he told CBS's "The Early Show."

However, while driving our $38,785 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4X4 from San Francisco to Los Angeles, we did explore a few out-of-the-way places where green mountains thrust skyward and condors soar, where the ocean laps sand soft enough to trap wimpier SUVs, and where the pinyon pines and the purple nightshades hide ravenous ticks who like to crawl up a car photographer's leg while he's composing a shot.

In other words, places where nobody who spends the same sum of money on a car will ever go.

"With each booth vehicle representing one vote, the most prominent models in each category are the winners. The SEMA Award celebrates these outstanding vehicles that emerge each year at the show."

The SEMA Award honors those vehicles that specialty-equipment manufacturers believe are the best platforms for accessorization and that showcase this year's coolest products. The award recognizes four outstanding vehicle models in four categories ? "Hottest Car," "Hottest Sport Compact Car," "Hottest Truck," and "Hottest 4x4-SUV." It also underscores the cooperative relationship between the automakers and SEMA-member companies.

"There is no shortage of options for new car and truck buyers. The ability to accessorize a vehicle often impacts the decision on which vehicle to purchase. The SEMA Award helps guide consumers to the most accessory friendly vehicles on the market by demonstrating the unlimited potential for customization," added Kersting.
